Co-op Owners Step-Up to Support the Ashland Emergency Food Bank!

AFC and AEFB Press Release - Local Strength!

In April, the Ashland Food Co-op Board of Directors announced to the community that the Co-op would be returning 100% of the 2019 Patronage Dividend to its owners. The 100% Patronage Dividend return to Co-op owners converted to over $628,000.

The Co-op Board felt in this time of great need it was not the right time for the Co-op to put away funds for the future, but rather to support owners fully so they may have more strength to weather these stormy times.

Co-op owners were invited to use any amount of their dividend to support the needs of their family, friends and community. The Co-op team created a convenient option for owners to donate all or a portion of their patronage dividend to the Ashland Emergency Food Bank (AEFB), a local non-profit which supports Ashland and Talent residents or people who work or worked in Ashland prior to COVID-19.

Within a three week period of time, over $16,000 was donated by Co-op owners. The AEFB Board of Directors were deeply moved by the generosity and support of their local community. They quickly made the decision to use the $16,000 towards buying locally grown produce and organic products.

George Kramer, AEFB Board President, and Tracy Kaiser, Marketing and Education Manager for the Co-op, have been brainstorming new ways to partner on programs and strengthen their support for local farmers and producers. CSA opportunities, simple cooking classes and community meal kits are just a few of their thoughts.

In February, the Co-op hired Prepared Foods Manager, Chef Reagan Roach. Reagan was a key leader in developing a Farm to Table concept prior to his position at the Co-op. Reagan is passionate about sourcing local products for the Co-op and will be supporting the AEFB team and Tracy on their locally sourced programs.

Now more than ever, the Co-op way of “stronger together” has never been so empowering for our earth, our local economy and our local organizations who support making our community healthier!

“The Ashland Emergency Food Bank would like the Oregon Shakespeare Festival employees and our local restaurant staff to know - we are in this together and we are here for you! We recognize our food insecure community may change quickly in the next few months," states George Kramer from AEFB. More than ever, this is why partnerships with the Co-op and other local organizations are key to keeping our community healthy.

On the Road to Sustainability

Forty six years ago, a group of families formed a buying club to access sustainable, local organic food as an alternative to modern industrial agriculture. This humble foundation of social and environmental responsibility started the Ashland Food Co-op and has shaped every decision we’ve ever made. It’s how, over four decades later, that a small buying club became a 30 million dollar, 17,500 square foot Certified Organic Retailer diverting 82% of their discards from the landfill.

2018 Kids Summer Camps

We’ve teamed up with Rogue Valley Farm to School to offer three different camps this summer. Each week campers will dive into food production, preparation and exploration, with a mix of farm and kitchen experiences that delight the senses and inspire the soul. Join Rogue Valley Farm to School staff as they cultivate the ability to grow and cook delicious, healthy, seasonal meals. Monday - Wednesday at the Co-op Community Classroom, Thursday & Friday at the Farm at SOU.

Proposals Sought for the 2018 Community Grants

The funding cycle for the 2018 Co-op Community Grants for nonprofit organizations is now open.

Every spring, for more than 20 years, we’ve been donating to area nonprofits through our Community Grant program. We are committed to creating healthy, sustainable communities and this program helps us fulfill that commitment by supporting the amazing work of local nonprofits. The Community Grant program is also the highlight of Cooperative Principle 7, Concern for Community, and is something we take to heart.

A recent visitor commented that our parking is totally inadequate to our business volume. What’s true is that we cannot create more parking due to space and municipal code constraints. Thus, the value of each available space is increasing over time. Assuming only half of Co-op shoppers use automobile parking, each space supports at least $200,000 in annual sales.

Meet Board of Director Julie O'Dwyer

When not working on Board of Director efforts, my profession is an Interior and Building Designer. I own the Ashland Design Studio, located in the Historic Railroad District, and have a design services studio there - JulieO Design. I have been in the architectural design business my whole life; from crawling around my father's architectural studio to traveling around the world working on buildings large and small to now having created my own niche in the local building community. I took a few years off this path to own and run Tease Restaurant here in Ashland.
