Judy Emanuel

I was born in Los Angeles California, graduated from San Francisco State College, and then became a social worker for Los Angeles Social Services for eight years. I applied to 25 medical schools when I was 36 (and told by most that I was too old) and was accepted by Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Michigan. I completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and spent 8 years as the Assistant Chief of PM&R at a Veteran's Hospital in Ohio.

I then spent 5 years in private practice in Santa Fe, New Mexico and 17 years in private practice in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. While I was there I studied Hawaiian Medicine with Kahuna Lau Lapau, Papa Henry Away for 5 years. I returned to the mainland in 2010 to be closer to my daughter and grandchild and the mountains that I dearly missed. I was a medical marijana doctor here and now would like to do lifestyle medicine on a part time basis.

I have enjoyed living in Ashland with its many activities, interesting people, and opportunities to spend time in the mountains. I have had many opportunities to meet and work with people of all races and ethnicities. I feel at home in the world and know that everyone deserves respect and kindness. We are really just one family. I am a member of the Self Realization Fellowship, meditate, and do believe in a kind and loving God (I know some of you do not and that is OK with me). I try every day to be a better person. Sometimes I am not a better person and I make mistakes but when I do it is easy for me to say I am sorry and try to improve in the future. I would like to volunteer at the Co-op because it is a wonderful community and in addition to being a member for 10 years, I would like to participate at a deeper level.

Why do you want to serve as an AFC Board Director?
