Salt Dough Ornaments
This week we are making salt dough which is a fun and versatile dough for making Christmas ornaments. The basic recipe is: combine 1 ½ cups of warm water with 1 cup of salt, add 4 cups of flour and knead by hand, adding more flour if needed to keep it from sticking to your hands. Roll dough to ¼” thickness and use your favorite holiday cookie cutters to create fun shapes for the tree. Before baking at 250 degrees for 2-3 hours or until dry, remember to punch a hole in the top so you can tie a ribbon to the finished ornament for hanging. Some variations to consider: Add some cinnamon to the dough for a festive smell and a beautiful brown color, or add food coloring to dough before rolling.
After cutting out shapes but before baking, use stamps to leave a design or saying on the ornament and after it is completely cool you can further decorate it with paint. Use a glue gun to add glitter, rhinestones or other bling. Cutting a shape out of the center of your shape will create some negative space that makes your ornament a picture frame. You can also use the dough as modeling clay and create figurines or other three dimensional object. Overall, have fun and be creative, these make great gifts, and are a fun way to spend a Saturday in the kitchen with your little one. Don’t forget to write the date on your ornament, so you can “remember when”.
