Halloween is a mixed bag of candy in my book. On the one hand, I love all the kiddos dressed up having fun, and on the other hand, the candy chock full of GMO ingredients that makes its way into our home is absolutely frightening! I want my daughter to dress up and enjoy the ritual of this holiday, but I don’t want her to eat anything that comes home in the pumpkin. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could dedicate a neighborhood in Ashland to healthy treats only?
We could all pitch in and buy great things that we want our children to eat, and then have parties all up on the down the neighborhood, bringing us all together to take turns handing out the snacks. In my fantasy Halloween Stella would come home with a pumpkin full of seaweed snacks, bunny crackers, pistachios, fruit leathers, dried cinnamon apples, dried pumpkin seeds, an organic lollypop, a ginger chew, and some gummy worms. She would have snacks for her lunch for the next 2 weeks at least! In my reality Halloween Stella will come home with candy that is destined for art projects. She will be allowed to have a couple of pieces and with all of the rest we will, like we do every year, unwrap it all and get out colorful sheets of construction paper and the glue gun and create an artistic rainbow of candy which we will then place by the front door to appease the spirits of the season. Healthy Halloween everyone!
