Organic Consumers Association Names AFC to List of Top 10 Right to Know Grocers in the Pacific Northwest
AFC has been recognized for our efforts to determine GMOs in the products we sell. We were selected from a field of more than 150 stores that were nominated by hundreds of consumers from around the country.
“As demand grows for organic, locally and sustainably grown, truthfully labeled non-GMO foods, hundreds of food retailers are rising to the occasion,” said Ronnie Cummins, National Director. “The OCA wants to recognize the efforts stores like Ashland Food Co-op are making, which include pressuring food manufacturers to transition from GMO to non-GMO ingredients, and providing consumers with clear labeling so they can make informed choices.”
Our Product Standards committee has worked hard to identify products with suspect GMOs in the first three ingredients. After an initial GMO audit more than 70 products were found to violate our current standards and have already been removed. The committee also granted 14 provisional exceptions based on product uniqueness or popularity. There are signs by these products to alert you to their status.
