Alta Vista Farm

• Principals: Loren and Cerise Brown
• Farm Name: Alta Vista Farm
• Location: Cave Junction, Oregon
• Miles to Market: 65
• Size: 8 acres
• Supplies to Co-op: blueberries

"We lucked into a really nice little microclimate," says Loren Brown, co-owner of Alta Vista Farm. Thirty miles from the ocean, this eight-acre farm sees hot days and chilly nights, which suits blueberries. That's what gives the Alta Vista Farm blueberries their snap and deep flavor, and the farm is Oregon Tilth Certified Organic.  They've gone the extra mile to make sure that you know these good-looking berries are truly as good as they look.

Loren also attributes his farm's success to irrigation with water that comes right out of the mountains from a clean creek. Their property came with an 1883 water right to the creek that provides an ideal drink for the blueberry bushes. The creek even has steelhead trout in it - a sign of its aquatic health.

The middle of July is the height of the season for blueberries. Fifteen people are required in these crucial weeks on Alta Vista Farm to harvest the blueberries. During the winter, Loren turns to commercial fishing. His wife Cerise is a labor and delivery nurse in Crescent City and alternates weeks of on-call nursing with weeks of work on the farm. Now that's dedication!
